Commercially available simulation tools can be used to design flexible manufacturing and assembly systems. However, tool based support for shop-floor decision making is less well developed as an area. This project will consider the use of real time material-flow simulation tools to support shop floor managers and supervisors for 'what if' decision making in the area of scheduling. It will build upon the ESPRIT COMPRESS and ICEP projects, the results of which will be disseminated to the SME sector in India via the IIT in Delhi.
Colleagues from the IIT Delhi have visited CIMRU of the University College Galway and GRAI/LAP at the University of Bordeaux to study advanced production planning and control systems and methods to design and implement real time shop floor decision support systems. The results of European projects such as IMPACS, ICEP, COMPRESS and MIA, as well as their application in European manufacturing plants, have been studied. Preliminary analyses of two Indian manufacturing plants have been completed in order to understand the potential for the use of shop floor simulators to support real time decision making.
A major seminar was held for industrial companies in new Delhi in April 1996. This seminar was supported by the European partners, attracted over twenty participants, and covered the topic of production planning and control for manufacturing companies. A follow-up seminar which will include a presentation of European software products and the results of an analysis of Indian industrial requirements will be held in India in January 1997.
