Objectivies and Approach

The objective of this project is to promote microelectronics in Latin American countries through the creation of specialised groups in the Universities and Research centres. Training and promoting these groups is the basis to develop the knowledge on microelectronics in those countries which will enable them, in a medium and long term, to train human resources, obtain research results, and boost a real cooperation between those centres and industry in the field of microelectronics. An additional objective is to introduce European microelectronics training and utilisation into Latin America.

The economic situation of these countries makes it particularly important to consider the short and medium term industrial aspects. The continuity of the participation of these groups will depend on an industrial demand of the respective countries on highly skilled human resources.

To reach the proposed objectives, the project is divided into two phases :

European links: The project builds on ESPRIT project EUROCHIP (6573). A strong collaboartion with EuroPractice Basic Services has been established.

Progress and Results

The network of the participating organisations and the links with the European partners have been built up. Results have been presented in the annual workshops of the project. There is a growing collaboration with industries manifested by the large industrial participation in the second workshop that took place in Sao Paolo. IBERCHIP forms currently 100 engineers per year; it has organised 25 new courses for the training of 20 university groups of engineers and 10 industry engineers.
