Objectivies and Approach

CIMIS.NET focuses on research and development of distributed and heterogeneous information systems with an emphasis on information integration, definition of integrated infrastructures, definition of reference models and standardisation. The aim is to exchange experiences and to approach some of the new challenges in advanced manufacturing systems. Work items include: integrating infrastructure for distributed industrial systems; distributed object-oriented information management systems; STEP/Express based modelling for engineering applications; experiments on modelling constructs for engineering applications; understanding requirements for simultaneous engineering.

Progress and Results

The results obtained within CIMIS.NET have been described in two special issues of the journal "Studies in Informatics and Control" (Vol. 3, N.2-3, 1994, and the issue on Balanced Automation Systems, June 1996), a special section of the "Brazilian Journal of Mechanical Sciences" (Vol. XVI, N.3, 1994) and the proceedings of BASYS'95 and BASYS'96, published by Chapman & Hall.

Information Dissemination Activities and/or Exploitation

In addition to the aforementioned publications, the partners have over 45 publications by authors from the two continents in journals and international conferences. (The list of publications may be requested from the project coordinator.)

CIMIS.NET coorganised the conferences ECLA.CIM'93, ECLA'94, BASYS'95 and BASYS'96. It also organised one advanced school in Portugal, one in Brazil and two Costa Rica (November 1995, July 1995, April 1995 and September 1995 respectively) on Aspects on Computer Integrated Manufacturing -in particular Information Integration in CIM and Optimisation Techniques in CIM-, on New Technologies in the Industry Information Systems, on Simulation in Control Engineering, and on Intelligent Control Systems.

Six issues of a specific CIMIS.NET newsletter have been published.
