The project aims at promoting collaboration in research, development and evaluation of methods for designing Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS), including the control architecture, with special focus on SME scenarios. Main topics are: electronic catalog of CIM components and interactive planning of IMS; methods for migration from legacy systems; manufacturing systems control architectures; systems monitoring; distributed factory information and communication systems; balanced automation systems and technology migration techniques.

The results obtained within FLEXSYS have been described in two special issues of the journal "Studies in Informatics and Control" (Vol. 3, N.2-3, 1994, and the issue on Balanced Automation Systems, June 1996) and the proceedings of BASYS'95 and BASYS'96, published by Chapman & Hall.
In addition to the aforementioned publications, the partners have over 30 publications by authors from the two continents in journals and international conferences. (The list of publications may be requested from the project coordinator.)
FLEXSYS organised a workshop on Robotics and Manufacturing (Mexico, 1993) and coorganised the conferences ECLA.CIM'93, ECLA'94, BASYS'95 and BASYS'96. It also organised two advanced schools in Mexico (August 1993 and July 1994) on Modelling and Design of Discrete Event Structures, and on Systems Integration and Modelling for FMS/FAS.
