The project objective is to develop techniques for the construction of inter-ORB (object request broker) gateways. Work will include:
The project will use the Orbix and DOME vendor ORBs to demonstrate its results.
European links: ESPRIT Project COMANDOS (2071).
Within the project, an architecture for inter-ORB gateways has been developed. The approach has been based on the definition of generic frameworks which allow the instantiation of half-bridges for specific ORB implementations. A gateway consists of a pair of half-bridges communicating via the Internet Inter-Orb Protocol (IIOP). The emerging OMG standards for CORBA 2.0, IIOP and CORBA Services have been analysed and followed. A set of services (including persistence, relationship and event services) and tools for monitoring and visualisation have been produced to support the development and the demonstration of the gateway. The gateway architecture has been validated and demonstrated using the Orbix and DOME ORBs from IONA and Object Oriented Technologies.
The results are disseminated to the academic and standards communities through use of the world wide web and through a series of publications and presentations at international conferences (a list of publications may be requested from the coordinator). They will be exploited by the EU partners as a part of their commercial operations. Through the project, Eastern European partners will gain access to ORB technology to exploit in their respective domains.
