The main objective of this project is to produce a tool-set for the development of advanced expert systems. The tool-set is based on Prolog extended with software tools for supporting programming paradigms useful to expert systems. The project also seeks to explore the integration and use of advanced graphical interfaces and parallel processing within the tool-set, as well as to develop prototype applications relevant to the Hungarian market in order to guide the advancement of the tool-set and to validate it.
European links: UK SERC project GR/G56478 (Cooperative KBS Browsing), ESPRIT projects PEPMA (2471) and EDS (2025), Compulog European Network of Excellence.
The main results are: a Prolog tool-set for expert systems development that integrates language extensions for frames, memorisation, uncertainty and functional rules; tool-set components for 3D diagrammatic interaction and for conventional 2D graphical user interfacing; two prototype applications of the tool-set, CONSULT (a credit rating systems for rating bank loads) and EMRM (an electronic medical record management system); parallel processing is successfully shown to be exploitable in the frame hierarchy search and the uncertainty handling parts of the tool-set; interfacing large Prolog-based applications to the world wide web (WWW) has been explored in interfacing EMRM to the WWW.
The results of the project have been disseminated through conference and workshop papers and a demonstration. The credit rating system will be further developed into a commercial system. The electronic medical record management system will be developed in further research projects with the view to commercialise it. The tool-set itself will be used to form the basis of other applications.
The academic partners will use the results of the project in their teaching and further research activities.
