Objectives

The main goal of OSACA, following on from project 6379, is the definition of a hardware independent reference architecture for controls in automation systems including the functionality of numerical controls (NC), robot controls (RC), programmable logic controls (PLC) and cell controls (CC). The architecture is built up by a hierarchical framework of functional units, the services they offer and their interfaces to a control platform. The platform consists of hardware and system software, like operating, communication and configuration system, graphics server and database system. OSACA also defines the services which have to be offered by the platform and includes first prototyping.

A detailed analysis during OSACA has shown that for some areas of the system software layer, namely operating, database and graphics system, products can be found on the market which fulfil the requirements of a control platform. Despite many existing standards, there are other areas, such as communication, configuration and dialogue management systems, where no suitable products are available.

The main goal of OSACA II is to establish a software pool by a joint development of system software modules in conformance with the specifications made in OSACA. Joint activities are possible because all missing modules can be based on a uniform, standardised and vendor neutral operating system interface.

Each partner will implement a share of the missing modules and will have access to all other software developed within the project. The developments will significantly improve European control technology based on common standards.
