Development of stand-alone micro-mechanical systems is severely limited by the absence of reliable sensors exhibiting very good long-term performance, as well as by the lack of low-power electronics able to interrogate sensors and analyse their signals. These two fundamental elements will be investigated and integrated in dedicated mechanical environments with a supplementary capability for remote signal treatment.
The project aims to develop battery-powered microsystems for two different large-volume consumer markets: automotive (on-road measurement of type pressure and temperature) and heat metering. The main objectives are to provide very low power electronics (about 10 microamps at 3 V for each application), capacitive-type sensors compatible with a harsh environment (vibrations, high operation temperature, mechanical particles striking the sensor), very long term stability reaching 20 years for the fiscal meters and low manufacturing cost.
The project will result in two prototypes for the considered applications. The work will cover all major aspects of the development that are: capacitive sensors based on new functioning concept, low power interface electronics and microprocessor, new signal analysis technique, integration of these elements into microsystems.
This development may have a positive impact on different applications aimed at remote control in hazardous environments; stand-alone systems for long term monitoring of different variables, improvement of handled electronics systems.
