Objectives and Approach

System integration is today considered to be a serious bottleneck in industrial embedded systems development. Errors and inconsistencies in the conception of the system under development appear typically too late during testing and integration. The IDERS project addresses the system integration bottleneck by enabling pro-active system testing and integration activities earlier in the product life cycle.

The IDERS project aims to develop a process model for the complete visibility of real-time software work products during their development, with associated tool support for enactment, visualisation, planning and management. This will comprise:

• a configurable graphical animation workbench for visualisation of the specification and design notations used in the development process
• a tool supporting fully semantically configuration of the design notations used allowing adaptation to company or project/product specific requirements
• a host-based simulation environment that will allow the implementation of a system under development to be animated in the host environment
• methodology and tool support that will in combination allow an incremental development and integration strategy for complete visibility of evolving products and an integrated product development process.

Exploitation

The IDERS consortium consists of three types of participants:

• Tool-manufacturing partners, with their long-term interests to develop, market, sell and support an integrated tool set for the real-time systems market, develop, market and provide appropriate services for the market, and build a successful commercial collaboration between tool manufacturing partners that will lead to the evolution of the IDERS approach and the products in the future.
• End-users and external evaluation sites representing the market requirements and needs.
• Research institutes and universities providing technology transfer into the project and participants.
