a prototype low-cost system for visual surveillance and security applications

Objectives and Approach

Tasks to be covered by the system include motion detection, detection of changes in the environment, analysis of crowd behaviour, and interactions between individuals, crowds and the environment. The robustness and reliability of the system will be an important consideration in the presence of varying illumination conditions and in natural outdoor environments.

The parallel system will be based on generic programmable components and on a modular and layered application software structure supported by a distributed operating system software.

Applications which are representative of this market sector are provided through the commercial end-users participating in the project. They cover applications in the retail and transport sectors.
