Objectives

This Action aims to develop an economically viable prototype application able to stimulate the dissemination and preservation of the European cultural heritage; to propose appropriate standards (data formats) in order to harmonise similar applications in Europe and world-wide; and to generate business opportunities for hardware and software providers and the electronic publishing industry. There are two projects under HEL-MME CU:

Multimedia Application based on the Cultural Heritage of Northern Greece (CU-9)

The ALEXANDER project aims to: a) introduce and establish advance facilities in representative areas of the cultural heritage based on treasures of Northern Greece; b) create databases of art objects; c) create multimedia applications and product prototypes using a) and b). To achieve aim a), facilities for capturing and recording of art objects will be established in two representative areas of the cultural heritage and history in Northern Greece (Dion, Vergina). Under aim b), a database mechanism will be established for achieving the retrieval of images and text. Under aim c), a prototype CD-I covering historical aspects of ancient Macedonia will be made. The project will develop two demonstrators, one in the Byzantine Museum in Athens, and another in the University of Thessaloniki.

Interactive Multimedia Applications involving the History and Cultural Heritage of Northern Greece (with Special Emphasis on Macedonia) (CU-13)

IMAGINA aims to apply the multimedia technology in the important field of the history and culture of Macedonia. The subject of the IMAGINA project is the history and culture of Macedonia, encompassing not only its political history but also its political institutions, social structures, economy, language, religion, art and intellectual achievements from prehistory to the present day.

The CD-ROM that will be published will take advantage of the state-of-the-art of the authoring multimedia applications using the latest technological platforms and standards. The multimedia material will be collected and retrieved by the most well-known scientists and artists of Greece.
