The MULTIDOC project to improve the production, administration and handling of dossiers formed from documents and data. It addresses both the production of documents and their exchange as dossiers within and between enterprises. The overall objective is to devise and develop an information system capable of cost effective and straightforward management of administrative dossiers by co-operative working. MULTIDOC intends to provide a coherent environment to support office procedures through with documents are periodically produced according to predefined templates. It will support the office procedure from the first stage of description of the case (data capture, scanning legal documents, etc) to the final stage of document production, covering the formal circulation of an electronic dossier throughout the organisation.
Both the circulation and the maintenance of dossiers are complex processes which must be supported by adequate user interfaces. MULTIDOC adopts a cyclical developmental approach (conceptualisation/specification/application) in an interactive fashion in close co-operation with a range of user organisations and groups. Dossiers and their management are approach through considering both their organisation and circulation. Documents within dossiers are considered from the points of view of their creation and management, a special emphasis being put on the automated production of structured documents. The storage and management of multimedia documents, including primary copies of legal or contractual importance, will be realised through a block server, supported by various tools, as part of the eventual MULTIDOC dossier management shell.
During the first year of the project, a first set of experiments was performed with customers to assess the adequacy of MULTIDOC concepts to customers requirements. The whole solution was specified and first prototypes were developed. It is expected that a first version of MULTIDOC will be ready before the end of 1993 and will be used for starting commercial exploitation. It might concern Banks and Insurances, Large Industries or Public Administrations which deliver official documents such as authorisations, decisions or contracts.
