The objective of MOSAIC is to develop advanced hybrid and monolithically integrated optoelectronic devices for high-capacity IT and communication systems. The capacity will be achieved by combining high-bit rate and wavelength multiplexing, including coherent techniques. Both transmitter and receiver modules will be developed, and these will incorporate detectors, DFB lasers, waveguide devices, optical amplifiers, filters WDMS and electronics.
In order to demonstrate the functionality of these devices and to prove the user-friendly aspects offered by the packaging techniques developed within the project, modules will be fabricated and included within a simple system demonstrator.
The combination of monolithic integration and hybrid assembly techniques will allow the techno-economic viability of both approaches to be assessed. A comparison will be made to select the best integration technology for optoelectronic circuit applications in an IT environment (discrete, ceramic hybrid, silicon hybrid or monolithic).
The project has defined and validated the technology and the integration schemes that are being used for both monolithic and hybrid devices. Specifications of the submodules and of the system test-bed have been produced together with a number of key system experiments such as the use of semiconductor optical amplifiers as preamplifiers for high-speed (2.5 to 10 Gbit/s) as well as WDM receivers.
