The objective of OSACA is the definition of a hardware-independent reference architecture for numerical machine tool equipment including the functionalities of numerical controls (NC), robot controls (RC), programmable logic controls (PLC), and cell controls (CC). It will form a common base for all kind of automation systems and will be open for the integration of new functionalities and for the use of new computing equipment..
Project work has started with a detailed analysis of the state of the art as well as of user needs. Object oriented principles have been adopted for the specification of the reference architecture. Implementation guides for control and machine tool vendors will include a detailed description of general mechanisms, standard objects, their attributes, services and state diagrams.
The OSACA communication system will define the internal communication within the control, as well as the communication with superior systems, based e.g. on MAP and CNMA standards, and with subordinate systems such as sensors and actuators using standardised fieldbus systems and drive interfaces. The configuration system allows to specify the topology of the control during the boot phase, bur also to perform a dynamical reconfiguration during runtime. Project work does also include the specification of the operating system interface based on the POSIX standard and the interface to realtime database systems.
Results of the project will be demonstrated during the EMO'95 in Milano. The project will contribute to the development of standards through the preparation of implementation guides for use both within the project and outside the consortium. Results will be exploited directly by control manufacturers within the consortium in the design of new control systems.
OSACA will result in shorter time to market and increased flexibility for the adaption of controls to the special demands of machine tools and manufacturing cells. Costs for development, adaption, commissioning raining, documentation and maintenance will be reduced.
