The objective of MATRAS is to enhance the representation of freeform workpiece geometry in machine tool controllers (CNC) for 3 to 5 axis milling. This will allow the use of CAD datafiles including complex mathematical descriptions such as rational surface splines as direct input for the CNC, and interpretation of such surfaces including all corrections and transformations in realtime at the CNC.
Work will include the development of spline interpretation within the CNC, using both cubic splines and rational surface splines, and a new expanded geometric data interface between CAD and CNC.
After integration of the system components, the system will be tested and optimised in a setting which is representative of technical and commercial industrial requirements. Results of the project will be incorporated in CNCs marketed by consortium members.
