Objectives

The objective of HIRED is to develop high-power visible InGaAlP lasers for use in erasable optical recording and optical printing applications. The project concentrates on the use of strained-layer quantum well InGaAlP lasers for achieving low threshold and high power.

A key aim is the realisation of 50 mW index-guided InGaAlP lasers with diffraction-limited beams operating at up to 50 °ree;C with a lifetime of some 10 000 hours.

The project is organised into three phases:

Progress and Results

Strained-layer InGaAlP multi-layer structures have been grown and characterised (also under high pressures), and refractive index measurements made. Gain calculations were performed, including leakage currents via higher minima.

Various types of index-guided 670 nm structures have been realised, and the results compared with waveguide modelling results.

High power values (up to 50 mW) have been obtained, even at high temperatures. Good reliability was achieved at 30 MW and 50 °ree;C.
