Objectives

The objectives of SINTOMA are to optimise machine tool set up procedures, to improve machine tool design through feedback of machine tool performance data, and to develop aportable service and diagnostic system. These will be achieved by integrating sensors and processing the data obtained using knowledge-based (KB) techniques to evaluate machine tool behaviour.

Work will include:

The results will be demonstrated on a lathe and a milling centre, and their application to other types of machines such as presses, grinding machines, laser cutting machines, electro-discharge machines and robots are also envisaged. Results will be exploited directly by machine tool companies associated with the project and through sales of the portable sevice and diagnostic system.
