The SPECTRE project aims to produce a multimedia graphics system that gives users the ability to create and edit 3-D images. The system will be usable either free-standing or within a local area network (LAN), where it will provide an authoring facility from any of the multimedia workstations.
A key aspect of this project is its development of a high-performance, real-time 3D graphics system. In order to achieve the desired performance, it will be necessary to execute carefully designed algorithms using hardware with extremely high computing power. This will be achieved through the use of parallel combinations of high-speed microprocessors together with specially designed ASICs.
A stand-alone graphics system will first be produced, using modular architecture, that exploits an ASIC already developed in the SPIRIT workstation project (2484/5397). This system will be the prototype of a marketable product. Subsequent work will develop more advanced ASICs with enhanced rendering capabilities and special facilities for texturing surfaces. The graphics system will be supported by software conforming to international graphics standards, so facilitating the development of applications by end-users.
Potential applications include animation sequences for use in business and training packages and the opportunity to interact with images of real-world situations in simulations.
