This project builds on results from project 5369 (HEPHAESTOS 1). The objective of HEPHAESTOS 2 is to construct an intelligent robot welding system for thick-steel fabrication.
The robot will derive its path instructions from a-priori knowledge incorporated in a KBS and data obtained from multiple sensors, which identify the weld path, follow the weld seam trajectory, locale weld tacks, corner intersections and weld finish points, and avoid obstacles along the weld path. Effort will be focused primarily on software development to control the welding process, including knowledge-based systems for workpiece recognition and plan generation.
A robotic welding system has been installed at the ship repair yard of one of the industrial partners, on which the project developments will be demonstrated. The results of the project will be incorporated in robotic welding systems marketed by the vendor consortium members..
The results will be applicable in many branches of heavy engineering, including the construction of ships, bridges, off-shore structures, and any large welded assembly where geometric complexity is involved.
