The objective of this action was to explore the challenge posed by information technology (IT) to the textile and shoe industries. The consortium comprised two textile manufacturers, three IT service companies and two universities.
The work examined IT support in several planning and manufacturing functions: collection design, product design (especially production cost estimation and "artificial vision", nesting, scheduling, simulation and handling.
The results of the action were presented at a workshop in Eindhoven in December 1991. The overall conclusion was that intelligent IT solutions are important in raising the competitiveness of the fashion industry. Potential savings of up to 30% were identified in one of the functions studied.
