Objectives and Approach

A growing number of institutions need to distribute video-based information widely and cost-effectively within their organisations. Examples can be found in applications such as teaching, video conferencing and financial trading rooms.

The overall objective of the PROVIDE project was to demonstrate the feasability of distributing text and graphics-based video images in a digital, compressed format using standard local area network technology. In order to implement a cost-effective prototype system, PROVIDE had to research, develop and deliver the following:

Results

All goals were met or exceeded. Both project teams maintained a close and effective working relationship and the individual PROVIDE components developed independently by both participants were successfully integrated at ISELQUI's laboratories in Ancona, Italy. Both participants regard the PROVIDE project as highly successful and productive.

PROVIDE has yielded commercially relevant products within a very short time frame and the business impact has already been highly positive. Both participants have achieved significant spin-offs which are directly and immediately applicable to their core business activities; indeed, DESISCo has already achieved sales of PROVIDE-related technology to a number of major European financial institutions.

Exploitation

ISELQUI intends to exploit the results of this project primarily within the video-conferencing area. DESISCo intends to exploit the results of this project in the financial trading room marketplace and has already launched three new products developed directly from the PROVIDE project:

These products represent a significant advance in the provision of solutions for the distribution of video-based information services in financial trading rooms and were formally launched by DESISCo at the Computer-In-The-City exhibition and conference held in London on 10-12 November 1992. DESISCo financial trading solutions based on these products are already in live operation at major financial institutions in Berlin, Edinburgh, London, Milan and Munich.
