Objectives and Approach

The Business Class project aims at introducing object-oriented technology in the field of business application development, and more generally of information system development.

The approach is to:

Progress and Results

All the tools have been developed so far as a first stand alone version. The second version being implemented now is an integrated toolset over a common repository. This version is in a pre-industrial state.

This toolset includes:

The process covers the overall development lifecycle: an automated mapping of the specifications through the PCTE/OMS based repository allows for reuse by the design CASE tool.

Throughout these phases, existing software components can be reused. The project developed interface components such as an Eiffel/Oracle interface, CICS interface components, and applicative libraries in the field of business applications. Some specific features as the introduction of persistency in Eiffel have been developed for the purpose of adapting the outcome of the project to the specific needs of business environments. Pilot applications are being developed. They aim at validating the concepts and tools of Business Class.

Exploitation

The first commercial exploitation of individual results has begun. Many of the tools have been designed in a generic enough way to be integrable in other software environments. Therefore, the partners are fully able to adapt their commercial strategy to the evolution of the market of software engineering tools and platforms. BC integrated environment is also being promoted by the partners, most of them intending to actively commercialise and market BC results. Commitment to standards like OMG and PCTE provides a guarantee that these tools will be able to evolve and find the right marketing positioning in the rapidly evolving software engineering arena.
