Objectives and Approach

The objective of this project is to develop a knowledge-based system for decision support in production scheduling and control. The system will provide a graphical user interface and it is intended to use KBL as a stand-alone or as a module to be integrated in existing or future CIM systems.

The novel features of the work are:

• inclusion of a knowledge base and an intelligent advisory system to optimise productivity
• integration of different scheduling algorithms and company-specific constraints
• configurability by SME user personnel
• inclusion of simulation and analysis support
• inclusion of open interfaces to other systems (SFDC, DNC, etc).

Two industrial test-sites have been identified.

The benefits to SMEs will lie in the improvement of production efficiency and the reduction of costs by the better scheduling and management of resources and stocks.
