Objectives and Approach

Industry is characterised by increasing complex technological processes and sophisticated equipment that must be supplemented by advanced automation systems to ensure efficient, safe and cost-effective production. In this context, it is crucial to guarantee high plant availability by minimising down-time. The aim of ARTIST is to match this need of strategic importance by developing tools allowing to diagnose from observation of the system variables the causes of a failure and, possibly, to early detect developing faults.

ARTIST is based on a new approach to diagnosis, model-based reasoning, now regarded as an evolutionary path from expert systems. Whereas expert systems rely on representing the knowledge human experts in order to solve the problems, model-based reasoning allows reasoning to be based on "first principles", using a qualitative and/or quantitative model of the domain.

ARTIST has been developed with a view to first application in two widely different, economically important industrial processes: electricity transmission and oil refining. In these areas two complementary demonstrations were set up: one seeking to identify the operating conditions of the major devices of the electricity transmission network: the other the operation of a crude oil refinery. Wide application in these important sectors is in itself a major outcome of the project, but they are just two examples of a range of problems in industrial plant automation. The technology developed in the project can be applied in many industrial areas, such as power generation, chemical processes and diagnosis of electronic circuitry.

Exploitation

The ARTIST consortium is introducing this new technology in several of the above mentioned areas.

CISE is developing applications to thermal power plants (diagnosis of the boiler and the steam condenser), and energy transmission networks.

CEPSA intends integrating the system developed in ARTIST into its Operation and Supervisory Refinery System.

DELPHI plans to integrate ARTIST technology into its SVP graphical package for process supervision.

MESARTEAM is introducing ARTIST in CIM applications for the cement industry, the pharmaceuticals industry and elsewhere.

SIEMENS plant to use the ARTIST technology in a whole range of short and long term applications, covering power transmission networks, gas and water networks, and possibly chemical processes, car electronics and circuits boards.
