Objectives and Approach

The objective of KWICK were to develop a prototype of a system that provides the knowledge worker with the necessary tools to increase his productivity and the quality of his or her work, that enables the collection and surveying of relevant knowledge in a heterogeneous environment. A further objective was to develop a set of demonstrators to illustrate the value of KWICK in real end-user environments.

Progress and Results

Prototypes of a basic KWICK system, an end-user application and three demonstrators were obtained.

The basic KWICK system offers facilities for building customised KWICK applications, manipulating KWICK knowledge repositories, and extending the user's environment with foreign applications and repositories.

Two functions of the basic system, linking and navigating, address a key problem for knowledge workers: the collection and surveying of relevant knowledge in a heterogeneous environment. The linking function allows "chunks" of knowledge, which are relevant for the user, to be related in a hypermedia structure. These chunks can be located in different sources and linking is possible even if these sources do not themselves possess hypertext structures. KWICK's navigating function allows the user to travel through the knowledge structure created.

The basic system is extended by editing facilities and scientific services, provided by two basic application components: HyperDocument Processor and Scientific Services.

In addition to the basic system an end-user application KwickNotes and three KWICK demonstrators, SDOC, Intelligent Safeguard System and Active Book, were developed to demonstrate the capabilities of KWICK at prototype level in three different end-user environments.

Exploitation

The partners plan to exploit the results in the following ways:
