The mission of RICHE is to construct a framework for open information and communication systems for health care in Europe, and to demonstrate the feasibility of this evolutionary approach. RICHE, which started as an ESPRIT project, has now evolved into an open initiative for pre-competitive collaboration with any user or industrial European organisation subscribing to its mission and objectives.
The general objectives of RICHE are to develop and advance:
The RICHE project has produced three results:
The central part of RICHE is the innovative cooperative act management concept. The RICHE implementation of this concept allows all health professionals (including physicians and nurses) to automatically arrange for and report on all patient care activities within the hospital. At the same time it supports the necessary transfer of data between health professionals who contribute to the care given to a single patient. Moreover, the data managed by act management serves the needs of managers in their control of the overall performance of hospital activities. Act management is supported by several knowledge bases and the appropriate knowledge management tools. At this stage numerical and textual information are manipulated - activities are on their way to expand this into other media data. Medical and nursing care functional component systems complete the RICHE-based hospital information system, allowing different categories of end-users to work with the system.
All the project results have been taken on by Groupe RICHE. At the end of the RICHE project the feasibility of the chosen approach was demonstrated, and reviewed with positive result. Moreover, the relevance of the framework and reference architecture work was underlined by the expert reviewers, with clear recommendations of the continuity and sound evolution of this promising initiative.
Groupe RICHE is now aimed to put the results of the project and of subsequent activities in practice by promoting their acceptance and adoption in professional circles throughout EUROPE. Moreover, it has actively commenced to support and advance the RICHE framework. Groupe RICHE consists of user organisations, software, service and integrator companies, agencies and industries collaborating under its mission. The work of Groupe RICHE strongly broadens access from the user community to open state-of-the-art cost effective hospital information processing facilities, it allows vendors to position their offerings according to a clear reference, and to enter into improved and augmented marketing, it further promotes European co-operation in health care informatics, and it further contributes to the development of relevant international standards.
These general advantages for the various parties involved in the health care information and communication systems market, are all based on the position of the RICHE framework as the common reference basis for the construction of open hospital information systems. The open, modular approach of RICHE towards hospital information systems makes it possible that hospitals build their systems in accordance with their local requirements, yet on the basis of a similar proven European methodology and standards. The appearance of such open systems in the hospital will lead to a revolution in the health IT market place. Advantages include vendor independence, flexibility, availability and cost-effectiveness.
Publications available include the public RICHE Final Report as well as the public versions of the RICHE Reference Architecture (end-user and engineering abstraction levels).
