Objectives and Approach

The MLT project built a basis for the commercial use of machine learning techniques.

Progress and Results

• A comprehensive toolbox of ten different learning algorithms has been adapted and developed. The algorithms cover a broad range of applications and have been made robust enough to stand up to industrial use. The delivery hardware and software both comply with industry standards.
• An advisory software consultant for the system (MLT Consultant) has been developed. This approach allows users unfamiliar with machine learning to incorporate the technology in their applications.
• A series of a dozen applications were exploited to guide the development of the above components. Evaluation and implementation methodologies were developed from the experience gained. These applications were developed in the field of design, diagnosis, pattern recognition and network maintenance.

Two main effects of the project were to:

• act as a focal point for machine learning activities in Europe, and pave the way for the definition of standard interfaces and representation formalisms
• enable tests to be made on real-life industrial applications of the usability of these techniques.

Exploitation

The exposure of the emerging machine learning technology into the business context is made through partner's customers applications and the productisation of some of the algorithms which are being packaged in vendors tools. Plans currently cover manufacturing applications, the consolidation of an advanced knowledge-engineering environment, the development and implementation of a knowledge-based clinical support system, and the support to pharmaceutical applications.

The distribution of the MLT algorithms is being prepared by the Turing Institute and GMD. A software and documentation server is being installed by GMD. The Turing Institute, INRIA, ISOFT, GMD and FORTH are developing external commercial applications. ALCATEL, BRITISH AEROSPACE and SIEMENS are exploiting the relevant results internally.

The MLT book is being published.
