The goal of the POLYGLOT project was to demonstrate, through research, the feasibility of the multi-lingual voice interface (input/output) for a number of commercially promising applications. The objective of the project was to integrate phonetic, lexical, and syntactic knowledge common to text-to-speech and speech-to-text conversion, providing greater generality, lower cost, and easier extensions. POLYGLOT also aimed to provide the results of the research and applied technology on a PC.
Most of the technologies and basic research were developed during the first years of the project. Many technological goals were reached and the project is to be considered a success. The final year of the project was devoted to system and technology integration through applied research.
The results are:
The demonstration of the results of the research was oriented towards the following set of applied technologies:
All the partners plan to improve and develop the POLYGLOT technologies in accordance with specific strategic exploitation plans within the different partners' organisations. In particular, the knowledge and expertise developed in the project has enabled several partners to engage in a cooperation with European organisations.
An interesting area of applied technology is that of the medical report. In fact, in Europe some prototypes of the medical report dictation are already in use in some major hospitals. The academic and research partners will contribute to the diffusion of the technology and will use the research results to expand their consultancy and education programmes.
Also, technologies and applications developed in the project have been presented and demonstrated in public events that has shown the PC-based multilingual voice interface technologies.
